Do PhD Skills Transfer to Industry? My First Project Answered
Every PhD student who looks toward industry asks the same 2 AM question: will any of this actually transfer, or did I just spend years becoming unemployable? Training can’t answer that. A real project can. This is the story of mine.
OJT — and the Project That Never Happened
After the classroom phase came OJT (on-the-job training), from August to November 2025.
The original plan for me was tidy: join the thermal engineering team working for a major Japanese automaker. A thermal person goes to the thermal team — sensible, predictable.
It never happened. Instead, I was assigned to something the company itself was doing for the first time: datacenter cooling, for one of Japan’s largest technology conglomerates.
The team was small: three engineers — the team leader, a senior, and me — plus two advisors (one of them the group leader, a rank above the team leader). None of us was familiar with Simscape, the tool the system would be built in. The division of labor made my role very clear: the team leader set the direction of what we should be doing each day and updated the results; the senior worked on the Simulink side in the beginning; and the Simscape work itself — the actual design of the cooling system — was all mine. Months out of graduate school, and I was the main engineer for the one part nobody else knew.
I only found out later how that decision had been made. At a 飲み会 (nomikai — a drinking party), I heard that some of the people above had been nervous about the risk of putting the newest member in charge of the main design — while others supported the idea, because they believed in my performance. My own guess at the reason: probably that I learn fast. I’ll never know for sure. But I’m glad the second group won the argument.
First project, new field for the company, and the pen in the newest hand. If you’re a new grad expecting a slow ramp-up — know that the “challenge nobody here has done before” sometimes lands on the newest desk.
The Tool I Had Never Touched
There was one more complication: the project would be built in Simscape, MathWorks’ physical-systems modeling tool.
My training had covered Simulink. Related, yes — same family, same window, even — but Simscape models physical networks (fluids, thermal masses, heat exchangers) in a fundamentally different way. And no one was going to teach it to me; there was no senior Simscape engineer to shadow, because the whole point was that this was new.
So November 2025 became my self-study month: me, and the official MathWorks documentation, page by page. Then from December 2025, when the project properly started, I built the system the way every real engineering project seems to get built — starting from the closest MATLAB example models, then reshaping them, block by block, into what the client actually needed. The project ran through March 2026, closing together with the Japanese fiscal year.
So — Did the PhD Transfer?
Here is my honest, two-part answer.
The topic didn’t transfer. The meta-skill did — completely.
Nobody in industry needed my quantitative phase microscopy. Nobody asked about my publications. In that sense, the pessimists are right: the content of a doctorate can be worth surprisingly little outside the lab.
But think about what a PhD actually trains you to do, underneath the topic: you are handed a pile of dense documents nobody will explain to you, and you must turn them into something that works. For five years, that was papers and optical setups. In November 2025, it was the MathWorks documentation and a cooling system. Same muscle, different weights. Learning a professional simulation tool alone, from documentation, on a deadline, didn’t frighten me — because that is literally the job description of a doctoral student.
And the domain half-transferred. My PhD field was optothermal engineering. The optics half stayed on the shelf — but the thermal half paid the rent: heat transfer, thermal resistance, the vocabulary the documentation was written in. While colleagues would have needed to learn the physics and the tool, I only needed the tool.
If you’re mid-PhD and worried: stop asking whether your topic transfers. Ask whether you’ve learned to teach yourself hard things from primary documents. That’s the asset.
