From Written Test to Interview: My Experience with Tsukuba’s Applied Physics Entrance Exam

This time, I would like to share my experience taking the entrance exam for the Master’s Program in Applied Physics (電子・物理工学) at the University of Tsukuba. As I mentioned previously, this exam took place over two days, consisting of a written test followed by an interview. The written test was conducted first, with the interview on the following day.

Before the exam started, I had a brief conversation with 2-3 other prospective students. During the exam (August 2019), there were a total of six international students applying, and only two were accepted. Coincidentally, I and one of the students I spoke to before the exam were accepted, and we have stayed in touch ever since. He also continued on to the PhD program, so it’s very likely that we will graduate around the same time. I was lucky to have spoken with him before the exam, as our interactions were much less awkward when the classes started. We often took the same courses.

After completing the written test, I tried to calm myself down and forget about everything related to the exam for a while, convincing myself that I had done my best. To ease my mind, I returned to my hotel, but not before stopping by Tsukuba Center for lunch. At that time, I wasn’t very hungry, so I chose Gindako (銀だこ), a takoyaki stand located in the food court of Q’t near Tsukuba Center. Eating takoyaki after the exam really helped me feel more relaxed and cleared my mind.

Once back at the hotel, I decided to rest for a bit and took some time to prepare for the interview the next day. Since I wasn’t sure what kinds of questions would be asked, I practiced introducing myself multiple times, making sure I could present myself confidently and positively. This practice was very important because, during the interview, you’ll be evaluated by a panel of several to dozens of professors. Therefore, make sure to practice as much as possible to leave a strong impression on the interviewers.

For prospective students preparing for a similar exam, I’d like to share past exam questions from previous years. You can access them through the following link (free). If you need the answer keys, I have the answers in Japanese, which I got from a friend (I originally tried to find the answers myself). Although the answers are in Japanese, the flow is quite easy to follow, and I will provide access for a certain fee as obtaining these materials wasn’t easy (message me here).

Conclusion

Taking the entrance exam for the Master’s program in Applied Physics at the University of Tsukuba was a challenging but rewarding experience. With good preparation, not only academically but also psychologically, I was able to go through the exams more calmly and confidently. Interaction with other prospective students also provided important moral support throughout this journey. For anyone preparing for a similar exam, make sure to prepare thoroughly and don’t forget to take time to relax to keep your mind clear.
